MASK REFLECTION
What is socialization and how does it affect your life and our society?
Socialization is the process in which people learn how to be people from other people. Sounds complicated, right? In this paragraph I am going to explain the stages of the Cycle of Socialization. The first stage of socialization is “The beginning.” The beginning is when you are first born and the months or year afterwards. No socialization takes place at this point because you are too young. The second stage of socialization is “First Socialization.” “We begin to be socialized by the people we love and trust the most, our families or the adults who are raising us. They shape our self concepts and self perceptions, the norms and rules we must follow the roles we are taught to play, our expectations for the future, and our dreams” (Harro, 17). First, socialization is when you learn right and wrong, good and bad, etc. This stage is vital for humans to be humans. The next stage is “Cultural and Institutional Socialization.” This is when you are sent to school, go to church, anything that has to do with the so called “outside world.” During this stage you may learn or be taught different things than you did during your first socialization. Teachers, friends, pastors, etc. become a part of your everyday socialization. The next stage is “Enforcements.” In this stage you are either punished for going against society’s standards and expectations or you are rewarded for conforming to society’s image. The next stage of socialization is “Results.” This stage is, as stated, the outcome of all the previous stages. The final stage of socialization is “Directions for Change.” This stage is when you decide whether or not you are going to conform to what society wants or rebel against those expectations. This is when you decide whether or not you’re going to break the cycle.
Describe the project as if someone who's never been to Animas wants to know what you did. Explain the essay and explain how your mask represents your essay.
We began our Mask Project with learning about socialization and how it works. We learned signs for each stage and made sure we knew each one and the sign for them. Then we learned about TEA paragraphs and how to write one efficiently and with a high level of skill. We started with our body paragraphs and then moved to our Socialization paragraph. We then turned them into Matt for critique. After we got them back we learned how to write conclusions and introductions. We then started on those and we corrected what Matt suggested in his critique. After our papers were complete (as a rough draft) we did peer critique. After we got our rough draft done with critique we started with our masks. We used plaster and made molds of our faces. Then we brainstormed how to decorate our masks. Our next step was to correct our rough drafts and start decorating our masks. We completed our masks and turned in one other draft before completing our entire project.
Describe the process we went through as a class in writing our essays. What important ideas and techniques did you learn?
Our first step in writing our essays was to write our first three body paragraphs in TEA format. TEA stands for Topic, Evidence, and Analysis. We had to use our main Essay Topic to create three topics under that. Those were our three topic sentences. Evidence is when you gather facts, statistics, and interviews. This is when you support your topic sentence. The last thing is Analysis. This is when you take the facts and dissect them and voice your opinion on what the facts mean, or what you think they mean. We then had to write a paragraph on Socialization in the same format.
Describe what you are proud of so far in your first year at Animas as a student and a person, and what you are looking to improve upon. This can be something inside or outside of Humanities class.
So far I am proud of my quality of work that I have been learning to produce, I feel like I have done a good job at refinement and I am proud of that. As a person I am proud of how I have gotten more comfortable talking in front of my classmates. I feel like I could academically improve on taking suggestions from my peers to improve my work. As a person I feel like I can improve my presenting skills.
